It was made known today that a rare Antonio Stradivarius viola, one of only ten that he made, has been placed on loan with Amihai Grosz, principal viola of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.
The so-called ‘Macdonald’ viola, dated around 1719, was sold in a private deal with the Stretton Society, which assigns instruments in its collection to worthy performers. The price has not been divulged, but it is reported to be considerably higher than the record £23 million paid last year for the 1715 ‘Baron Knoop’ Stradivarius violin.
Grosz, 46, was a founder of the Jerusalem Quartet who joined the Berlin Phil in 2010.
Until now he has played on loan a 1570 Gasparo da Salò viola.
