Breaking: Philly puts Marsalis symphony on hold
A fifth symphony by Wynton Marsalis, scheduled for premiere next week under Marin Alsop’s baton, has been indefinitely postponed.
No-one’s saying why. A joint statement by the orchestra and the composer reads like this:
‘Large-scale new commissions evolve throughout the creative process, and all parties agreed that additional time would best support the long-term life of the new symphony. We remain committed to this collaboration and look forward to announcing future plans for the premiere.’
The symphony, timed for America’s 250th anniversary, was supposed to reflect the Philadelphia Orchestra’s ‘commitment to amplifying historically marginalized voices and inviting great American musicians to our stages.’
