The latest production of Samuel Barber’s opera 'Vanessa' feels fundamentally hollow, having been stripped of the very elements that give the work its haunting, gothic power. The stage design, in its pursuit of minimalism, has discarded the claustrophobic atmosphere essential to the narrative, leaving the characters to wander through a sterile, uninspired space.
