The formidable trombonist Frank Mathison took up the instrument in the army, joined the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra for 13 years and was recommended to the London Symphoy Orchestra by the conductor Jascha Horenstein.
He was bass trombone in the LSO for three decades, playing on the great John Williams film scores before moving back to Yorshire.
He retired at the age of 93 and, five years on, has just breathed his last.
