Weeks after the unseemly dismissal of Markus Hinterhäuser as artistic director, the festival is placing advertisements across international media this weekend, seeking applicants for its two top jobs, starting in October 2027.
Both the presidency, held by Kristina Hammer, and the interim artistic directorship – Karin Bergmann – are up for grabs. This is a constitutional device to maintain a semblance of transparency.
The selection committee, however, is headed by an insider – former Federal Theatre Director Christian Kircher, who was until recently a member of the festival’s board of trustees.
