The death has been communicated of Désiré N’kaoua, a name that rings distant bells. Born in Constantine, Algeria, in June 1933, he triumphed at the Geneva International Piano Competition in 1961, winning engagements with the Berlin Philharmonic and other elite orchestras. But the international record companies showed little enthusiasm and his career was confined mostly to bijou labels and venues that prized quality above commercial hype.
