From a 90th birthday interview in the Saturday Times: …he will not be marking his birthday in Israel, although he has worked there for decades. He was named music director for life by the Israel Philharmonic in 1981, becoming music director emeritus in 2019. But this year he cancelled all his engagements in the country in protest against the government’s treatment of Palestinians. “I refuse to go because of Mr Netanyahu. The mayor of Tel Aviv called me yesterday and said, ‘Are you going to come or not?’ I said, ‘I will go next year when I hope the next elections will have got him out.’ He said, ‘Bravo.’” His contempt for Netanyahu is equalled only by his opinion of Donald Trump. “Those two swine deserve each other,” Mehta says.
